where is Flinders Island?

A Self Guided Tour

Your welcome to Flinders Island begins when you step off the aircraft. When you rent a car on Flinders Island, you will have immediate access to the entire island from the start of your visit.

The region is suited to eco-tourism and other low impact activities. These include bird watching, kayaking, bush walking, photography, and enjoying the natural surroundings.

It is also a great place to unwind for those who just want to escape the stresses of modern living and perhaps do a bit of fishing, play a round of golf, etc. (the 9-hole golf course has only been parred once in its 40 year history).

For families, the Furneaux region is a very safe environment to visit. The community is friendly and welcoming, there are walks to suit everybody, and most of the beaches are safe for all ages.

There are also many things to do on and around Flinders, other than just to relax and unwind in beautiful surroundings:

  • Fish for the 'catch of the day' - be it flathead, trevally, salmon or calamari
  • Dive! The islands are a fantastic place for great SCUBA diving and snorkelling
  • Hire a car and explore
  • Climb to the summit of Mt. Strzelecki and be amazed at the view
  • Explore the National Park
  • Explore the many walking tracks and trails with the assistance of a local walking guide book
  • Fossick for Killecrankie Diamonds
  • Enjoy the luxury of your own private beach and swim in crystal clear waters
  • Take in the view from one of the island's many lookouts
  • Steep yourself in local history and culture
  • Spend a few quiet moments at Wybalenna Chapel
  • Watch the mutton birds fly in from the viewing platform at Port Davies and marvel at the abundant wildlife or spot the forty-spotted Pardalote
  • Pitch a tent under the spectacular night sky

There is a network of more than 450 km of roads to cover on Flinders Island, which make for easy access to remote areas, beaches, rivers, farming areas, towns and shops.

With no public transport, and only one taxi service available on Flinders Island, it is therefore important to secure a rental vehicle before you arrive.

Many of the most popular tourist locations are isolated and distant from town.

Flinders Island Car Rental Companies

Both Flinders Island Car Rentals and Flinders Island Hire and Drive can help you navigate the most scenic routes, and get the most enjoyment from your stay. But remember, the island has abundant wildlife, much of which is nocturnal, therefore driving at dusk or after dark can be hazardous. Please slow down and take care.

All vehicles are supplied with comprehensive insurance unlimited kilometres and fully fuelled, with a 24 hour breakdown service. Select manual or automatic transmission vichles. Child seat locking bolts available. Pick up and drop off your vehicle at Whitemark Airport.

The rental fleets includes small and medium sedans and wagons along with eight and twelve seater self-drive minibuses.
